First dates can be awkward. Sometimes it feels like an interview, running through the standard where-are-you-from, what-do-you-do, etc questions until you either pass or fail the test. Other times the conversation can just die, leaving you both staring into the abyss until you find inspiration on the next question you should ask. These can be especially painful if it’s at the standard coffee-dinner-drinks date, where the silence can be deafening. So.. how about something different? Here are a ten unique first-date ideas below:
Cheer on a Sports Team
In our beta testing with hundreds of people, this continues to emerge as a top first-date concept that people love. It’s a lot of fun, it’s casual, you’re around tons of other people, it’s not too expensive, and if it’s a fantastic game, it can be an awesome bonding moment.
A surprising amount of people have told us how much fun a putt-putt first date would be. In fact, that’s how we got the name Element: a mid-twenties girl was explaining to us that on every dating app she get invited to drinks or dinner, but she is in her element when she’s playing putt-putt, but no guy has ever asked her to do that on typical dating platforms.
Let’s be honest: concerts are a blast even if the date itself goes very poorly. Especially one where you’re standing or outdoors or the crowd is going crazy. Or is that just us? Either way, can’t go wrong with a concert.
This might be hit or miss for some, but you can learn something delicious either way. Usually pretty casual, with a fun group, and if you’re great at cooking, you can really show off your skillllzzzzz and impress your date.
Group Activity (Boating?)
Everyone can use a wingman. So how about a group date doing something cool? Could be a group thing for anything mentioned on this list. We’re here in Charleston so a unique first-date idea could be a group boating activity or anything on the water.
Anything with Dogs
How can you be awkward or unhappy or worry about conversation when you’re holding a puppy? A good boy is the best way to be relaxed and in your element. Maybe walk the beach with a doggo or go to a dog park for a bit?
Movies can be tough first-dates because you can’t talk during them, but something like a comedy show allows you to chat, have fun, and laugh the entire time. Plus there are plenty of breaks and food or wine too.
If you’re a true romantic at heart, then horseback riding has to rank high up on your list, although they can be tough to pull off, unless you can find a place where you don’t need a guide and can roam more freely.
Hear us out on this one. Terrifying or adrenaline experiences can really be bonding moments. If you both jump out of the plane together, survive the free fall, and are there to hug each other on the safety of planet Earth, then you’ll probably be a bit more bonded than if you had chatted over a cup of coffee.
This one is a bit more open ended. We just think a great first-date is something unique, so if there is a unique or once-a-year type event going on in town, it’d probably be great to check out together. Plus, they can make you seem like a hip local insider.
Those are just a few unique first-date ideas, but there are hundreds of other ideas that I’m sure people have tried. But either way, we think people should try to be in their element in a first date, rather than a scenario where it feels like a high-pressured interview. When are you in your element? What would be a fun, memorable experience where you’d like to meet someone else? Our app, Element, is the only experience-first dating app, and we’re launching this fall in Charleston so be sure to follow us on social media and stay tuned!
